James L. Rappa ~ Artist Statement
As an artist I believe now more than ever it is important to think about the world and our place in it. We must continue to evolve, moving toward a greater understanding of how interconnected and interdependent life truly is on this small planet. As a civilization we stand at a crossroads. My intention is to positively influence the direction we collectively choose to take. My recent three-dimensional work examines the timeless iconography of the wing. Flight symbolizes freedom from the physical restrictions of the earthbound world and has long been thought of as a metaphor for mystical experience, bridging the gap between heaven and earth. Many of my pieces are contemporary altars, paying homage to the evolution of thought and personal growth. Much of my two dimensional work is ephemeral; transitory moments caputured in time, color and form on the canvas. My compositions are a call to rise above the past and move in a new and positive direction into the future. |
